"Call delayed on gun ordinance"4/3/2008 3:55:45 PM

"The proposed ordinance is modeled on similar laws in other N.C. towns,
including Marvin and Weddington. It would restrict gun firing to
self-defense and hunting, provided the hunter is shooting on his property
or has written permission from the property owner and neighbors.
....
The dispute over Land's range has highlighted the friction between the
area's rapid growth and its rural past.

Land, 56, has fired at targets with assorted pistols, long guns and
machine guns on his property since the early 1990s. When he bought the six
acres off Potter Road in 1991, the surrounding properties were farmland
and pastures."

whenever a region converts itself into a giant refugee camp
for the escapees of another regions failed economic policies
certain concessions are going to have to be made.

in this case we could mention water and the recently imposed
restrictions concerning its usage. or we could discuss the
concerns some have for where their children are going to be
schooled and how temporary trailers are simply unacceptable
leading up to the mandate some seek to impose concerning
increasing local property taxation.

some might even be willing to express their concerns for how
the local possum processing plant might be shut down... <g>

Circumstances change and ordinances change with them.

That is a problem when people arrive and demand that circumstances
change to their advantage, to the disadvantage of those already there.

The more classic example is for people who move to a subdivision near an
airport and then complain that the air traffic is too loud. So why did
they move there?

In a similar vein, those who don't like outdoor firearms practice
shouldn't move to rural settings where such practice is common and then
protest the supposed unsafe environment.

that's why I wish yousguys had not been forced to relocate. it was
yousguys natural tendency to change things to suit yourself that coined
the phrase "we don't care how you did it back up north."

LOL sadly true euphemism, but still pretty funny.
but we've already covered how the NC govern-0-mites
have the laws allowing forced annexations.

Considering that this began a sentence as a direct followup to my text,
kindly be careful about who you're including in "yousguys." I grew up
with a shooting range in the basement, my BS degree is from the
University of Wyoming, and the only thing I could see out my back window
for some years there was scrub grass, miniature cactus, and mountains.

To an extent I agree with your last paragraph. However, as population
densities increase there comes a point where such activities aren't
going to happen anymore.

and if you want to keep your outdoor firing range, it's in
your best interests to buy enough land around you to keep it a
safe distance from the neighbors.
we just moved our range because the elderly neighbors sold
their modular (on an acre leased from the town) to a couple
with boys approx. 9 & 12.
the original range had the town land behind it, behind the
neighbors leased land. we figured kids might go play in the
woods behind their house so we moved the range further back on
our land & backed it towards our wetlands.
then discovered the poor kids are seldom allowed outside.
they can't play outside unless a parent is home & out in the
yard, & they can't come over here to play or let my son play
over there unless a parent is home. when the parents are home,
one kid or the other or both are off to some scheduled
activity. so when my 7 year old is out playing, unsupervised,
the 2 boys are watching him out the window. sad really. Boo'd
love to have someone to play with & when these kids hit their
rebellious teens the parents won't know what hit them...
on a vaguely related note, my son had a note sent home from
school. seems the entire class was having a discussion of
"Things I Like To Do When I'm Bored". when it was Boo's turn
he said "I like to shoot targets with my pellet gun". he was
told that wasn't acceptable (why not? it *is* what he does) &
the teacher refused to write it on her list. later Boo was
explaining to Jessica about target shooting & was reprimanded
because he "might scare her". i know Jessica & her parents. he
wasn't going to scare her. if he had, she'd tell him off.
since there are 15 boys in a class of 18 kids & *all* of them
draw guns, bombs, & scenes of carnage, i'm pretty sure that
guns per se aren't a taboo subject so my kid is being singled
out for some other reason.

Most people have never tried possum so they don't know that it tastes like monkey.

Good for them. That's an entirely sensible restriction IMHO. I would
never, ever, allow my 7 yr old kids, to play in other peoples houses
unless a suitable adult was there.

What a single kid will get up to unsupervised, alone on his familiar
home patch, is nothing remotely like what mayhem any two + kids will
get up to together. As parents of two kids your neighbours will be well
aware of that. I refused to let my kid shoot tin cans with the
neighbours kid (age 12) when his dad wasn't there. When I explained
this to the (returned) dad, he was furious. His son had broken a sworn
trust to never, ever to open the gun cabinet, load or fire a gun when
his father wasn't there.

that teacher, exactly what she could not accept, and why.

Possibly, a reason he diplomatically decided not to mention to his
mother :-)

And the reason why you see so many flattened possums on the road is because they're always falling off the trucks of the possum rustlers who are smuggling them to Arkansas.
