and if you want to keep your outdoor firing range, it's in your best interests to buy enough land around you to keep it a safe distance from the neighbors. we just moved our range because the elderly neighbors sold their modular (on an acre leased from the town) to a couple with boys approx. 9 & 12. the original range had the town land behind it, behind the neighbors leased land. we figured kids might go play in the woods behind their house so we moved the range further back on our land & backed it towards our wetlands. then discovered the poor kids are seldom allowed outside. they can't play outside unless a parent is home & out in the yard, & they can't come over here to play or let my son play over there unless a parent is home. when the parents are home, one kid or the other or both are off to some scheduled activity. so when my 7 year old is out playing, unsupervised, the 2 boys are watching him out the window. sad really. Boo'd love to have someone to play with & when these kids hit their rebellious teens the parents won't know what hit them... on a vaguely related note, my son had a note sent home from school. seems the entire class was having a discussion of "Things I Like To Do When I'm Bored". when it was Boo's turn he said "I like to shoot targets with my pellet gun". he was told that wasn't acceptable (why not? it *is* what he does) & the teacher refused to write it on her list. later Boo was explaining to Jessica about target shooting & was reprimanded because he "might scare her". i know Jessica & her parents. he wasn't going to scare her. if he had, she'd tell him off. since there are 15 boys in a class of 18 kids & *all* of them draw guns, bombs, & scenes of carnage, i'm pretty sure that guns per se aren't a taboo subject so my kid is being singled out for some other reason. lee -- Last night while sitting in my chair I pinged a host that wasn't there It wasn't there again today The host resolved to NSA.

Good for them. That's an entirely sensible restriction IMHO. I would never, ever, allow my 7 yr old kids, to play in other peoples houses unless a suitable adult was there.
What a single kid will get up to unsupervised, alone on his familiar home patch, is nothing remotely like what mayhem any two + kids will get up to together. As parents of two kids your neighbours will be well aware of that. I refused to let my kid shoot tin cans with the neighbours kid (age 12) when his dad wasn't there. When I explained this to the (returned) dad, he was furious. His son had broken a sworn trust to never, ever to open the gun cabinet, load or fire a gun when his father wasn't there.

Did you hear that version direct from the teacher? I'd want to ask that teacher, exactly what she could not accept, and why.

Possibly, a reason he diplomatically decided not to mention to his mother :-) Boys will be boys.
Janet.

Excellent and objective comments, Janet.
